Does it actually feel like you?

While I was creating this new website, I started thinking about how often we might override ourselves because someone else is the expert.

I created my first website in 2020. I was given some prompts, took the advice and created what I thought people wanted to see.

And honestly?

I didn't like it.

I thought my discomfort was about putting myself out there. And yes, some of it probably was.

But looking back, I wonder if some of that discomfort was simply because it didn't feel like me.

Four years later, I took the website down.

For the next couple of years, I kept thinking, I should get my website back up.

But I didn't.

I looked at other domains. I looked at other people's websites. I overthought what I should communicate and what people might want to see.

Overthinking became overwhelming, so I took no action.

This time I'm doing things differently.

I'm getting help with strategy and clarity, but I'm also paying attention to how the process feels to me.

Do I cringe and withdraw?

Or do I lean in and smile?

It's not perfect. I'm sure I'll change it. I may even cringe at parts of it in a few years!

But right now, it feels like me.

And I'm discovering that there's something really freeing about allowing something to be mine before worrying about whether everyone else will like it.

I'm not suggesting we ignore advice or that our feelings are always right.

The beautiful woman I'm working with has knowledge and experience that I don't have, and I'm grateful for it.

But I'm learning that someone else's expertise doesn't have to mean overriding my own knowing.

I can listen. I can consider. I can take in another perspective.

And then I can notice:

How does this feel to me?

And now I'm wondering about you...

Is there somewhere in your life where you've followed someone else's advice because they're “the expert” - even though something about it hasn't quite sat right?

What if you didn't have to ignore their wisdom or override your own?

What if you could let their perspective inform you, while still staying connected to what feels true for you?

Maybe there's something worth getting curious about there.

✨ A little more on this

I've shared this story in a short video too - including a little more about my own website journey and what I've been noticing along the way.
